Florida mobile tire repair rules

Florida's Motor Vehicle Repair Act requires a written repair estimate when a job will cost more than $1501 1. A price may rise past the estimate only within a small margin unless you authorize more 2, and the invoice must say what was done, with used parts marked 3. This is general information, not legal advice.

The written estimate

When a customer asks a repair shop for work that will cost more than $1501, the shop must prepare a written repair estimate before any diagnostic work or repair 1. The estimate is a form that sets out the estimated cost.

A copy of the estimate goes to you before repair work begins1 1.

The statute also lists a separate notice, in capital letters in its own section, where you choose whether to request a written estimate. Waiving the estimate has to be done in writing, and a shop may not make that waiver a condition of doing the repair 4.

When the price can change

If the shop finds the work will cost more than the written estimate by more than $10 or 10 percent2, with the margin never above $502, it must tell you promptly and you must authorize, change or cancel the work 2.

It is unlawful for a shop to charge more than the written estimate plus that margin unless you authorized the extra 2.

You may authorize by phone, but only the written estimate is the record. If you agree to a higher price by phone, ask for the revised figure in writing or a text.

Parts removed from the vehicle

If you ask at the time the repair work is authorized2, you can inspect or take back the parts removed 2. On a tire job the removed part is the old tire.

The invoice

When the repair is finished the shop must give you a legible copy of an invoice3 3. The statute lists what it contains:

Records

Repair shops keep repair records, including estimates and invoices. Your records are available to you for inspection and copying for at least 12 months5 5.

Applying this to a mobile tire visit

A mobile visit is still a repair. Before the work starts, ask whether a written estimate applies and how you will receive it. Before you pay, read the invoice for the used-part line, the guarantee and the total against the estimate.

The independent business doing the work carries these duties. Curbjack is a booking service run by Terragroupe, LLC and does not repair vehicles. See the Miami Beach page for how bookings will work.
